Nbuvb / Photo therapy is nothing but the use of specific wavelength of light which occurs naturally as a component of sunlight and is called as ultraviolet light. Actually there are two forms of light as UVA & UVB. Phototherapy with UVA light needs internal medicines which may have many side effects & required a proper monitoring. So instead of UVA nowadays UVB is more recommended. UVB is safer & doesn’t require internal medicines. It is also very safe in children & pregnant women. Nbuvb is a light energy which emitted in a narrow band portion of Uvb in wavelength of 311 nm to 313 nm. This light actually suppresses the abnormal growth of normal cells & also suppresses the hyper immune reaction of body which occurs in vitiligo (Leucoderma) & psoriasis. It also stimulates pigment (black color) formation in vitiligo (leucoderma).
Nbuvb is very simple treatment. In this patient has to expose his body part which is affected in front of Nbuvb light with proper covering of other normal body part for particular time. Patient is either asked to sit in chamber of nbuvb lights if affected area is large or sit in front of small Nbuvb light unit if area is small. Time duration depends on area to be treated.
